Eureka Archaeological Research and Consulting UWA is a consulting unit within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at The University of Western Australia. Eureka offers a full range of archaeological services relating to Indigenous and European cultural heritage. We aim to provide independent, university standard archaeological services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organizations, the private sector and government.

Eureka provides professional archaeological consulting services, including background research, site surveys and recording, significance assessment, monitoring, salvage and excavation. Eureka has laboratory facilities for the analysis of excavated material as well as access to specialists in related disciplines. Eureka can also make use of the libraries and substantial archival resources held by The University of Western Australia.

Our archaeologists have experience in a wide range of archaeological consulting projects throughout Australia. Senior archaeologists are qualified to supervise the salvage and excavation of archaeological sites undertaken under Section 16 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972.

Professional fees apply to all Eureka consultancies and profits are used to support archaeological research at The University of Western Australia. Eureka operates under The University of Western Australia’s comprehensive insurance policies and our archaeologists are members of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists Inc. (AACAI) and the Australian Archaeological Association Inc. (AAA). Our research facilities and interests enable us to specialize in section 16 work.

Eureka works with local Indigenous communities and promotes the training of Aboriginal people as part of heritage consulting projects. Eureka reports are relevant and concise and written to comply with state and federal standards. Following consultation with Indigenous communities we provide practical recommendations and creative options to assist proponents in fulfilling their legislative requirements and obligations to Indigenous stakeholders. Archaeological sites are non renewable cultural resources and need to be properly and actively managed. Eureka encourages the integration of consulting with research and training opportunities to ensure ongoing high quality management of archaeological sites and resources. Eureka can also provide induction and training in heritage management, site identification and recording procedures to proponents, indigenous people and the broader community. Eureka can provide archaeological information for tourism enterprises.
