Indigenous Projects:

Chichester Ranges, Pilbara Aboriginal Archaeological Work Area and Work Program Survey (Rio Tinto)

Eureka undertook a series of Aboriginal archaeological work program and work area clearance surveys associated with proposed drilling programs at Bakers Ridge, Chichester Ranges. Representatives of the Nyiyaparli Native Title Claimant group participated in these surveys. Archaeological sites identified included artefact scatters, occupied rockshelters, quarries, a scarred tree and a historic stone arrangement. Grinding material, baler shell fragments and adzes are commonly associated with artefacts scatters in this area.

Swan Coastal Plain, South-Western Australia Desktop Research and Archaeological Assessment (Big Island Research Pty Ltd and Department of Water)

Eureka undertook an Aboriginal archaeological assessment of a series of wetlands on the Swan Coastal Plain, north of Perth. The aim was to investigate use of wetlands by the Noongar people in the past. Representatives of the Combined Metropolitan and Yued Native Title Claimant groups participated in the surveys. The assessment found that wetlands were important places to Noongar people in the past, with groups using these sources of water to move though the landscape.

Hamersley Ranges Aboriginal Archaeological Work Program Clearance Survey (Juluwarlu Aboriginal Corporation & Fortescue Metals Group)

Eureka undertook a 10 day Aboriginal archaeological work program clearance survey associated with a proposed drilling program on tenements within the central Hamersley Ranges. Archaeological sites recorded included artefact scatters, occupied rockshelters and a scarred tree. Sites were recorded to Site Avoidance level.

Weld Ranges Aboriginal Archaeological Work Program Clearance Survey (Yamatji Native Title Land and Sea Council & Sinosteel Midwest)

Eureka conducted Aboriginal archaeological surveys with the Wajarri Yamatji people, for Sinosteel Midwest, in the Weld Range near Cue. The Eureka team surveyed a series of drill lines along the 70 km length of the Weld Range. In total 32 sites were located, including artefact scatters, stone artefact quarries, rock shelters, rock art, scarred trees and other cultural sites.

Spinifex Ridge Stage 1 & 2 Aboriginal Archaeological Work Area and Work Program Survey (Pantarlangu Pty Ltd)

Eureka conducted site avoidance and site identification surveys with the Njamal people, for Moly Mines, at Spinifex Ridge near Marble Bar. Initial surveys located sites, then subsequent field trips aimed to record and characterise those sites to Section 18 level. Amongst these were a major collection of stone engraving rock art sites, along with numerous artefact scatters, grinding patches and stone artefact quarries.

Deep Gorge, Burrup Peninsular Aboriginal Rock Art Recording Project (Jo MacDonald Cultural Heritage Management)

Eureka provided staff assistance to the project which aimed to undertake a detailed recording of rock art at Deep Gorge, Burrup Peninsular, Dampier. The project aims to establish baseline data for Aboriginal art in the Burrup for comparison with Industrial and development consultant studies also taking place in the area.

Historical Projects:

Old Strawberry Farm Archaeological Excavation (National Trust)

Eureka worked with UWA archaeologists and students to conduct excavations at Old Farm Strawberry Hill in Albany, on behalf of the National Trust. The main farm-house at the Old Farm (dating to 1836) required urgent foundation stabilisation work and archaeological excavations preceeded this. As well as students learning more about excavation, a number of early drains and the remnants of the original farm building (which burnt down in 1870) were located.

Fremantle Prison Archaeological Test Excavation - Prison Parade Ground (Palassis Architects & Department of Housing and Works)

Eureka archaeologists conducted a series of excavations in the Fremantle Prison Parade Ground, to attempt to locate evidence of documented historical structures and features. While not all features were found, remnants of the original road, and a series of rubbish pits were located.

Fremantle Prison Archaeological Test Excavation - Visitors Centre Development (Philip Griffiths Architects & Department of Housing and Works)

Eureka archaeologists conducted exploratory excavation and archaeological monitoring at the site of the new Fremantle Prison Visitor Centre in 2008. This work was designed to locate and investigate any archaeological material prior to development of the site. A 19th Century brick floor and a number of other features predating 1900 were located.

South Coast European Heritage Site Inventory (South Coast Natural Resource Management)

Eureka conducted a project for South Coast Natural Resource Management, investigating European Heritage sites associated with estuaries, inlets and other waterways on the south coast of Western Australia. Historical documents related to eighteen southern waterways were searched and an inventory of documentary evidence produced. Seven priority waterways were surveyed archaeologically, both on foot and from the water using a boat. 78 archaeological sites were identified.

Historical Heritage Training & Resource Manual (Alcoa)

Eureka undertook historical research which resulted in staff training workshops and the production of a resource manual to assist Alcoa employees in the identification of historical heritage on Alcoa tenements. A portable handbook designed to enable Alcoa staff to recognise a range of historical archaeological features was also created.
